The Department of Culture of the Ministry of education and Culture is the main exponent of the cultural policy of the State as regards contemporary culture. By being responsible for the development of the Letters and the Arts in Cyprus, informing the public about cultural events and their participation in them, promoting the achievements of our cultural activities abroad as well as cultural synergies with other countries, the Department of Culture plays a vital role in shaping the cultural image of the country.
The Cinema Section is responsible for cinematographic productions, cinema education and professional training as well as festivals and distribution.
Through the “Program for the Development of Cyprus Cinema” the Ministry finances international co-productions, high and low budget feature films, short films, documentaries, animation, experimental films, as well as the local distribution and circulation of Cyprus films in Cinema – Theatres. It also provides financial support to filmmakers to participate at international film festivals and markets and in various educational seminars and workshops abroad.
The Ministry of Education and Culture is also responsible for bilateral agreements and the promotion of Cyprus as a filming destination location. Tax incentives are currently being developed. It also represents Cyprus in various E.E Cinema Expert Groups and to the Audiovisual Working Group in Brussels.
Cyprus is a founding member of Eurimages, member of the Media Program, the SEE Cinema Network and the EFAD.
Furthermore, Cyprus has signed the European Convention on Cinematographic Co-production.
